A Bit About Asbestos
Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals which share similar structural properties. They are made of extremely long, fine glass-like fibres which have a tendency to break up lengthwise into finer and finer strands - too small to see without a high powered optical microscope.
These fibres are highly carcinogenic and can have devastating health effects for workers and home-owners. Effects that are often not felt until 30-40 years after initial exposure. This is why asbestos products are referred to as the 'invisible killer'. For more information refer to our articles on asbestos exposure and identifying asbestos.
It is well known that asbestos was widely employed throughout the construction and industrial industries for the larger part of the last century. However, it is not so well known that these products are still widespread. In Australia and New Zealand asbestos has been used in over 3000 products and, despite a total ban on the use and manufacture of Asbestos products in 2003, is still present in approximately one third of Australian homes.
Our Services
Bonded Removals
Bonded asbestos materials are the most common type. They often consist of Portland cement or various resin/binders and cannot be crushed by hand when dry. Bonded materials include 'super six' fencing, wall panelling, electrical metering boards, eaves and more.
Asbestos cement products are still found in many Australian buildings.
This form of Asbestos construction material is considered the least dangerous and is generally safe when left alone. However, if the material must be disturbed by drilling or cutting, then it is a good idea to outsource that job to a licenced asbestos removalist. We can make sure that the job is done safely without contaminating your home or commercial premises with asbestos fibres.
Friable Removals
Friable asbestos material is any material that contains asbestos and is in the form of a powder or which can be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry. Floor tile adhesive (blackjack), insulation, highly degraded cement sheeting, sprayed limpet, mill-board, pipe and boiler lagging are examples of friable asbestos products.
Friable products are the most hazardous and also the most difficult to remove safely. Under health and safety legislation friable asbestos removals can only be performed by a Class A licenced asbestos removalist.
ANZ Enviro are class A licence holders and have the experience and ability to carry out friable removals to the highest safety standards. We will not compromise on safety for our asbestos removal operatives or for our clients. This is our point of difference.
Encapsulation and Make Safe
Sometimes the best thing to do is to leave it alone. ANZ Enviro can offer advice on the best way to go ahead with encapsulation and provide our guarantee that your property is safe.
Asbestos Testing Services
There is no way to tell for sure if a product contains asbestos by looking at it - which is why many people have chosen to use our asbestos testing services. We will process your sample at our National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited laboratory and tell you, with confidence, whether asbestos fibres are present.
This is often the first step of an asbestos removal job. If your test returns positive, we would be happy to provide you with advice and a quote for removal of the product. Please contact us for more information on our asbestos testing services.
Danger - Asbestos Exposure
There is no “safe” level of exposure to asbestos. The more fibres you are exposed to the greater the risk of asbestos disease. This is why it is so important to prevent exposure from occurring in the first place. Asbestos is known to be toxic, especially following prolonged exposure. Diseases caused by asbestos are asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and other cancers. Large numbers of Australian workers are still being diagnosed with asbestos related illnesses, many years after they were exposed. Many of these workers will die.
