Removal of Friable Asbestos Insulation Board (AIB) from the Yakamia Primary School, Albany, Western Australia

Wauters Enterprises engaged ANZ ENVIRO + Pty Ltd to remove 800m2 of friable asbestos insulation board ceiling linings from the Yakamia Primary School, Albany. Rather, than erect external scaffolding, roof edge protection and remove the AIB ceiling linings from above using harnesses and a fall arrest system, ANZ ENVIRO + proposed removal of the AIB ceilings from beneath which permitted a substantial cost saving in the cost of removal. The roof of the school was covered with tarpaulins, five separate asbestos work area enclosures constructed and placed under negative air pressure and the AIB ceilings then systematically removed. The removal required working from mobile scaffold towers, cutting through the hardwood roof timber joists to give access to the ceiling linings. These were then removed using wet stripping techniques and HEPA vacuuming. Independent asbestos air-monitoring was undertaken throughout the project which took 14 days to complete. All air-monitoring results were reported as less than 0.01 fibres per mL.
